Default When the shit goblins attack? - 27-09-2015, 10:34 PM

K and top-hat described having peaks and troughs in terms of moods on top-hats journal thread and it made me think - what do others do when things are shit?

I know K mentioned being away from friends and family where it isn't his first language having stinking moods and top-hat being back with parents and hitting rock bottom with approach anxiety. For me I have times when I feel shit too.

So what do you guys do to turn that frown upside down?

For me, I have a few things that really help me;
1. Weight workout - I find it incredibly easy to be mindful (more than other activities, less than meditating) when lifting weights to the point I am just there in
2. Cooking/eating - It's fun to get caught up with different flavours, desserts, sandwiches, grills or soup
3. Mock the Week - Living abroad with a different culture/language it helps to make me feel at home and grounded plus it makes me laugh
4. Ukulele - I can learn a song that I like, a song for somebody else, or just jam with songs that reflect me mood and help me express myself.
5. Savour feeling shit - sometimes it's good to feel shit, if everything was smiles and rainbows I guess life would be boring and so would I

I got low a couple of weeks ago, I knew it would be temporary though.
1. I re-joined a gym and did intense cardio. (For me it's probably the most important thing to keep positive).
2. Sleeping for at least 8 hours a night.
3. Day-game - As contrived as it sounds I've found the act of going out after work to talk to girls is a massive help. I've had one of the best years of my life because of this. Probably 2nd most important.
4. AirBnB guests - just chatting to them
5. Eat a nice steak
6. Do yoga.
7. Avoid booze, it sends me down.
8. A trip away on my mountain bike to Wales 8]

1. Gym at least 3 times a week
2. 30 mins meditation before bed (even driving with zero music has a similar effect but is obviously no fun
3. A good nights sleep
4. A night out with good friends
5. Daily regular interactions with people, work colleagues/housemates/whatever
6. Reduced evening 'screen' time, ie, less Facebook zoning out while watching a TV programme you don't care about

I apologize K, I mispoke/quoted.

Thanks for your feedback tho

Being away from support and not being able to express myself fluently on certain topics aren't causes of my bad times. I mentioned them as they are factors relative to how you recover from bad times, how you put yourself back in a good mood. That without them around what do you do?

And, for me, the most common thing I do is go outside and talk to someone. Generally, I find the immediacy of certain activities leaves no room for another me. Chatting to someone is a good example. The first time something upset me just minutes before a guest arrived I thought I'd be a mess... how could I welcome them to my home like this? But the doorbell rang triggering me, much like Pavlov's tortured dogs, to fetch my keys and forget whatever I was thinking about before. Table tennis, the ball travels too fast. Also, I couldn't mourn the recent, horrific deaths of everyone I'd ever loved and play table tennis simultaneously, or whichever sport that requires near constant engagement.

Peace,

Apologies. My bad. What I meant was more living arrangements. You've chosen to go out to Spain.

I like this thread though. The idea is right

I sometimes go out for a good blast in my car, there's a long stretch of country road near me that's good for a thrash.

Watch something funny or comedy related or something on TV you enjoy.

Go out for a casual chilled out walk, usually down by the beach, looking out at sea or watching the waves crashing back and fourth is quite releaxing.

Number 1 thing for me would be music - stick on some of your favourite tunes. I get totally into it & sing my absolute lungs out & probably get lost/carried away with it - but it serves a purpose i that it uplifts me & helps clear any negative feelings, by the time I'm finished singing like a twat those feelings have dispersed & i don't feel so bad about whatever it was.

I've tried meditation when I'm really, really in a shit mood, but admittedly when the red mist or storm clouds are over head I just can't concentrate enough & clear my mind for it.
