100%, if you're "good looking" it helps as it will make some women gravitate towards you more naturally, but if your friend is attempting to speak to every woman in a place and is still unsuccessful then what's coming out of his mouth (either the words, the way he's saying things, or both) is wrong.

Becoming overweight may mean that he stops getting the same level of immediate attention that he did when he was in better shape, but when he's approaching girls, the looks should matter less as he should be able to keep them entertained with words, not just standing there and having them look at him.

Put it this way. You walk into a bar and there's a load of 9's and 10's in there, but before you approach any of them, a 6/7 comes over and starts chatting to you and she's really interesting and funny. Suddenly, the fact that there are better looking people in the room doesn't matter as much as you're getting entertained by someone else, albeit not as good looking. Same applies in reverse. You (he) may not be the best looking person in a venue, but that doesn't mean that you can't get someone to respond positively to you with what you have to say (whether the words or the tonality).
