Default Mind Control Urself - 01-06-2011, 06:12 PM

Following on from the motivational speeches thread, short thought on the mind leading the body. [Arnie Speech "More important is the mind, the mind sculpts the body"]

1) Sounds arbitrary but I just knocked a shirt off its hanger and it fell on the floor, reached down, picked it up and hung it back on the hanger. I did this because the shirt 'wasn't supposed to be on the floor, it was supposed to be hanging up'.

I did not think about moving my body at all during the process. I just felt a belief feelng that something was out of place and took 'right action' to nullify the bad feeling. As soon as shirt back on hanger, feeling is gone. Much better. My point is that animating my limbs was automatic and consciously effortless.

2) This is an example of belief leading reality, in turn, leading physical actions. Therefore NLP affirmations such as 'I need to be strong, I need to be healthy, I need to get laid, I am supposed to be awesome' should lead to a better behaviour and body as soon as they become beliefs. The mind creates life in the body.

Not sure about those affirmations, the words "need" and "supposed", in and of themselves pre-suppose that you're not there already, so will be partially counter productive to the brain.

The spin that Arnie puts on it, is to think and behave as if it is the case NOW so it's less ambiguous to the brain. Least that's how I think affirmations are supposed to be conducted...

I've heard - don't say need, want, am striving etc. as they all presuppose you are not and you want to think like you are.
Yeah that's what I thought

Then there is the reality check side - don't say am if aren't as it will be rejected when you try to assimilate it with everything else you know, or it may stifle change as already are.
Make sense, but seems to remove a lot of options, what would be an example then that doesn't clash with current perception?

I tend to affirm my awesomeness, verbally, all the time without need for an affirmation session by the mirror each morning.
I think I might do it as a mantra when meditating, I've clearly still got a belief problem as the really uber fit girls still rattle me a bit. If I think I'm at their level or above, I'm getting good, but there is still some ceiling in my head that get's in my way.

The thing I most want to be reminded of at the moment is my own mortality
Not sure if that's depressing or inspiring!

If you want mortality in a nutshell watch the film 'Dead Man' with Johnny Depp. Watching it now and moping about life in general and how I'm going to probably die without my life ever being remotely how I wanted it to be. Stupid life. Its a privalege to understand the psychological and physiological workings of human life and a curse that the only way this happens is if you are more of an unwilling observer than an unthinking participant. Its a great film anyway.

I may be pouncing on a momentary grump of yours here Maxe, but in case not: snap out of it mate! I know exactly where you're coming from with the observer/participant thing. Exactly. It seems as if the world rewards ignorance, I've spent some time frequenting those kinds of corners of my mind in the past and it's not a good pattern. The thing about beliefs is that they require reinforcement to exist, so please stop reinforcing them. I don't know how to better say it, but least for me, when I lost the plot last year having been low for a while and started rebuilding, I was amazed at how far my perception had deviated from reality. It's not true, whatever you are telling yourself, it's not true. Things are a lot lighter and easier than you think if you just stop entertaining the beliefs...cos they are not real and without the re-inforcement things look different. Not easy but very satisfying. Chin up.

How about to state a belief about yourself and demonstrate a resolve to show awareness that supports that belief?

exmaple, "I believe I am awesome", then being aware of that word 'awesome' and being aware of your actions and interactions that support that belief. Eventually it should transition from belief to 'I am'?

I really struggle with this kind of stuff. I find it a chore and often buckle under a bombardment of negativity. It's a motivational thing. Maybe I should just try one affirmation at a time...
