a while back I looked into the boxing side more, locations, costs, etc, but just settled with the freely available punch bags at my gym's fitness studio.
Snake eyes, you should get in touch with Wake. He loves his MMA.
You got a dream... You gotta protect it. People can't do somethin' themselves, they wanna tell you you can't do it. If you want somethin', go get it. Period
Yep, big fan here. You were hard sparring after only your 2nd lesson? Sounds counter-productive to me but I guess everywhere is different! lol.
I have found combat sports really good not just physically but mentally too. It is challenging, humbling and often at times daunting, which you have to get over and get stuck in. Incredibly rewarding to challenge yourself and get through it. Similar aspects to pickup in that way.
Hey
Am also into mma and did it for 6 months last year before going back to muay Thai full time for logistical reasons. It's one of the toughest sports no doubt, but ite great for self confidence, fitness and physique. Is recommend it to anyone.
With respect to sparring, some clubs do it regularly and others will separate it out into a later session for the experienced guys. Be wary of a club that rarely does it because its the best way to learn,in my opinion, particularly for mma.

Yeh, sparring should definitely be available, but for beginners I don't think getting stuck into hard sparring early on is productive.
The way that I've had most success both learning and teaching, from the grappling side mainly though:
a) Learn a technique broken down slowly
b) Drill a bit with no resistance
c) Drill with 50% resistance
d) Drill with full resistance
Going full on with a beginner just causes them to spazz out in most cases cos they don't know what they're supposed to be doing and they're under pressure so don't have time to think about the technique they've been taught.
Awesome! Glad to hear others are doing this. Fantastic for self improvment. Really pushes me out of comfort zone, gets me fit and hopefully will make me more self assured.
The moves are taught very similar to this Niknak.
The sparring is only on your knees as it is a groundwork lesson. Still pretty rough though and didn't seem to stop some fucker standing up with me and dropping me on my head! My first week, held my own ok. This time however, I was exhausted and got absolutely caned on my 2nd and 3rd one by guys far bigger than me (I'm not small either!).
Also found in 1st week I could often get in dominant position, but couldn't finish them off as my technique is bad. Conditioning and technique, I am told, are the 2 most important factors.
Standing work tomorrow. I imagine this will be a lot of striking.
Who do people like watching to learn? Royce Gracey is an obvious choice I think.
