You can message people in a private capacity on FB, so I don't see how it holds you back from expressing your intentions to the girl. Note, I also use WhatsApp and WeChat to communicate with the ladies. These are also useful and work in the same manner as Facebook messaging and allow for more chat/banter.

Personally I hate facebook I get frustrated with the amount of message etc.. coming to my phone. Interesting the way people would settle for a facebook close, personally I'd say number or email; depending on how much you use facebook and what you post you don't want to seem like a complete dick.

As for cold approached via facebook. How many women actually reply back? Facebook seems a bit too try hard to me, might be me just not liking the idea though.

Your close depends on the situation, the environment. So how do you actually get their facebook?
It seems strange to me as the girl would have to tell you her full name, whereas if you ask for the email then it kinda seems less invasive.... or at least I thought.
