Default Nearly quit today - 15-04-2011, 09:09 PM

I just phoned my boss tonight to tell him I'm pissed off and thinking about quitting. He didn't pickup. I've worked there 7 years now but I've been getting more and more pissed with mew new boss. He does treat me like a child & I can do better.

I actually went to a job interview in London for a position for nearly 35% more than my current salary. They were really intrested in me but I decided not to go to the 2nd interview for a number of reasons. Mainly because if I wanted to live close it would be too expensive, even with the salary increase.
I also know a colleague who is contracting for 110% more than he was on and felt I could better than their offer.

Bascially I should have taken the job in London. Someone shoot me

I'm a business analyst at a pharma company I can also cut code but never done it for a living. You're right though, if they liked me in London other places will to... (I hope!)

I have a face to face interview on Thursday (following a successful telephone interview) for a job closer to home and potentially 6k more.

It's not really about the money or location. I'm just bored in my current job and want a challenge.

I actually am really excited about the opportunity which would mean travelling over Europe too, something which I'd like to do.

Anyway wish me luck guys!

Mate,
Go contracting. I have been doing it for 13 years now. Got paid loads more than staff people. I even set up my own limited company. Anyway London to Farnborough is only 40minutes and it is within the commuter belt, isnt it?
Good luck!

key levels to pump your income from work.....

- level of experience / seniority,
- industry to work in,
- contract vs perm
- location of job,
- tax situation
- taking into account commuting costs
- taking into account accomodation costs

GENERALLY, and I can't be assed if anyone replies with nit-picking of exceptions, London pays more than elsewhere in UK. In many industries within the PRIVATE SECTOR it is a substantial difference for London. On the other hand, accomodation costs in London are generally the highest in the UK. An idea of how much it costs to rent or buy in London can be garnered from any major UK property website.

I did commuting to London a few years ago however still managed to spend 3 hours a day commuting door to door.

At some point I'd still like to go contracting, however I have limited financial experience and that's what a lot of the city jobs want. I know contracting can be very lucrative especially if you avoid IR35. London does pay well but this job is pretty good salary and as Rebus has mentioned I'd be paying a lot less on commuting (potentially nothing if I cycle) & accommodation (decent 2 bedroom pads in London seem to start at 2k a month!).

I’ve found it can be difficult to compare income from contract to permanent.
For example if someone’s gets 350 a day contracting (inside IR35) on the face of it looks like 90k gross. However if you take off the usual benefits you'd get in a perm position (25 days holiday, 5 days sick, pension, healthcare, bonus, etc...) it
comes down to around 60k.

Anyway just because this job is perm doesn't mean I have to be loyal and stay there another 7 years. I'm still looking around for other jobs in case this one doesn't work out. Trying to live in abundance and all that...

Just like women, have an abundance attitude to jobs and u will fly thru interview process without getting too nervous or outcome dependant. They will all want to hire you because you behave like you have better offers already.
