Default Polyphasic Sleep - 06-12-2009, 11:03 PM

Polyphasic Sleep if you're not familiar with the term refers to sleeping multiple times in a single day. Its mentioned in 'The Game' which is where I first heard about it...

Basically I'm going to try to get my body used to 2 hours of sleep a day... In 'The Game' they try for 6 x 20 mins but I can't fit this schedule into my work schedule very well...

Im trying something called a Dymaxion sleep cycle... apparently the next 7-14 days of my life are going to be hell but if I get thru it I will have 6 hours spare a day

Anyway I will prob's edit this post to keep a sorta journal of my experiences as I think its a cool idea... Feel free to voice you're opinions

I've had 3 x 30 min naps at 6 hour intervals so far and feeling fine...

The schedule Im using is 30 min naps at 9:00-9:30 and 3:00-3:30 only times I will be sleeping...

Much Love
Dave xX

Yo mate,

Not sure what you are trying to achieve? More spare hours in the day? But in doing so, you are cutting on your sleep. I think it is such a bad idea. Your body needs as much sleep as it can get. If you need spare hours in the day, try cutting down on other activities but not your sleep.

Good Luck!

Yeah... What K said. And I can already see why so many people seem so hopeful then fail. So far my sleeps have been spot on but Im finding staying awake till the next one terrible at the moment and also getting up from one is hard but so far I have slept the exact amounts in the exact times which is the only way this will work properly...

I also looked for people who made the change properly (with the method Im using specifically)... There are a few cases of around 2 weeks but only one guy claims to have managed it fully past the transition stage apparently he done it for 2 years...

There are alot more success with the Uberman and everyman method... I cant fit the Uberman one in with work and the everyman doesn't seem to save much time... If this does fail then i will try the everyman as thats got much better reported success...

I've got plenty of time to research them now mind!

Much Love

Well for a start I'd say that often these sleep fads are nothing more than just that - fads. What's more, you're not doing your body any favours by sleeping little and often and are probably going to be leading to a detriment of your own health. Expect headaches (bad ones - think along the line of migraines) and some psychological problems.

Essentially, by sleeping for 30 minutes at a time, you're depriving your body of the most vital part of sleep - Rapid Eye Movement Sleep (REM hereafter). If you examine the alpha and beta brainwaves of someone when they are asleep, they go through a number of phases. Supposing they sleep from 11-7 (standard healthy sleep time for an adult):

Awake - Alpha and beta waves are all over the place, lots of background noise. Brain is active
11pm-1am - Alpha waves begin to slow down, and start to synchronise with the naturally slower beta waves. The brain is starting to shut down - consciousness centres are switched off and the autonomic nervous system begins to gain control.
1-3am - Alpha waves and beta waves have slowed right down and are almost perfectly synchronised and the brain is starting to enter a deeper sleep. Awakening at this point would not make you feel too shit, just a bit dopey and confused.
3-6am - REM sleep. Brain waves are at a very low frequency and brain activity is greatly reduced. It is thought that at this point the body really begins to truly rest. Awakening at this point feels fucking awful - anyone who has had to be up at 4am to catch an early flight will know what I'm on about. This is generally agreed to be the most vital part of sleep. Why, we are not sure, but those who miss out on it regularly show all sorts of problems.
6-7am - Recovery: brain waves begin to pick up frequency and brain activity increases. This is the phase of "coming around" - where you begin to wake up but aren't truly awake.

The point is this. REM sleep is vital for maintaining a healthy body and mind. Truth be told, alot of what's up there is from hazily-remembered sleep lectures from last year, but I remember clearly the importance of getting REM sleep in there. Sleeping for 30 minutes will barely allow brain waves to slow down so you're barely resting at all. It's like saying that you can run a marathon if you're allowed to have a sit down for 10 seconds every 10 miles.

Don't forget, also, that during REM and ultra-slow-wave (1-3am) is when the brain consolidates memory. This is why, the night before an exam, it's so important to get a good night's sleep - it's during this good quality sleep that memory is consolidated and we truly remember things.

Do what you like man, but I couldn't possibly recommend it. I'm going to stick to my 9 hours a night, it's seen me fine in pick-up so far.

It's just advice, fellas. Do whatever the FUCK you wanna do

Also, your marathon analogy is not analogous.

Good on you for trying it DB...If I had someone to wake me up I would def try it too! I have terrible trouble sleeping and will get maybe 3 hours if I am lucky for a week sometimes and then crash out all day Sunday for exampe. This is due to working Shifts, having the Internet and and generally not wanting to go to bed! But over the years I have found I learn to cope with fewer hours sleep - the body will adapt to whatever 'routine' you set it so hope it works for you this time....not sure how good it is for you long-term, but just listen to your body - keep us posted Brother!
