Being polite, like being confident with girls is not something you can just switch on and off like a switch. It is an attitude and a way of life. Equally a weak attitude will get you nowhere not matter what words you have planned or learned to say. I have nothing wrong with saying 'excuse me', but to the same degree I think things should be taken as they come. If the girl is in a rush and you feel you need to appologise so be it. At the same time I wouldn't advise approaching a girl in a rush unless you want a hard day game set! My personal preference is for girls in shops who are just browsing at stuff. Why do we need to think about how to stop moving targets?

There is nothing wrong with being direct as long as you mean what you are saying. If it's all words and no substance she'll smell this a mile off. Be honest and strong, and you'll be THE MAN.
