No they were free because Jenny bought you them after your drunken escapades!
I started off thinking I had to wear expensive interesting clothing but I started wearing less interesting (slogan tshirts etc) as my confidence grew. I think for newbies it helps because it gives you a boost but once you gain confidence in yourself you don't need it.
Although I would recommend experimenting with different styles etc. Social conditioning means there might have been things you were unwilling to try because of what you thought others would think of you. You might find that some things you just don't like but others that you think "this is me" so keep wearing it because you like it not because of others opinions as long as you feel confident.
