I'm sure you can control it a bit more than that on facebook? I lock mine down as much as possible, it is so annoying. Facebook is the mother of all evil.

Google + is bad ass. At the moment I'm loving the search feature. You can use it to create 'special interest streams' (just made that term up) that mix news sources and google + posts into one stream and continually updates live, like the BBC live text football stream.
The search function allows basic logic, so you can search very specifically. E.g. you could create a search for all the stuff Phil will be posting about by typing "hamster AND porn NOT (straight OR alive)".
