I think it is unfair to say he is being the chode

I think he may be confusing nervous with just that gutsy feeling you get when you like someone..

Maybe it threw OP off his game because she isn't an uber 10 stunner yet she is very confident and forward.. after all, I bet she could still get sex any day of the week (and look she did)..
