Or that pride themselves on having a bunch of strongly held political and moral stances that they don't act on in any practical or meaningful manner?

Aren't they all just as sad as one another?

Isn't it just as sad to pride yourself on how much you know about a bunch of random bands as it is to obsessivly process stats about some rubbish non-league team's recent run of form?

I think being a geek is always sad. And I think the difference is that geeks seek validation simply by recording and repeating pointless information about a given subject to other geeks, while people with 'interests and passions' are ACTIVE, they use passions, hobbies and interests as a means to enrich their lives rather than using them to make up for a lack of EMOTIONAL richness (in one or more other areas)?
I am myself am a geek of sorts and a fan of all of the above shows, superheroes and listen to obscure music. However i dont bang on about it to any and all, unless of course it is brought up and i dont know more than the basic facts for most of it.
I however can see the merrit and the reward that could come from an interest such as these.I can not for the life of me get my head round football tho???
So i i must disagree geeks are cool, provided you are an active geek rather than a stay in all your life geek right

Nothing wrong with geeky interests, but are you sharing knowledge to offer helpful information to other people or to just boost you're ego that you're good at something?

I'm quite geeky in the realms of downloading copyrighted movies, games, software, music. I never brag about it, but I always help people out for free. Someone needs a film getting, I just download, burn, free of charge and never ask for anything in return.

If people desire to do it themselves, I will offer an explanation of my methods, but it is quite unique and sometimes I do have to do some common sense google searching for what I want to find, which a lot of people seem unable to sift through the crap to find the good.

Want me 2 pm u when i am??
I and a friend had a chat last night and just cant for the life of us understand the need for this long running pointless football conversation where everyone thinks theyre a team manager??
I thought maybe one of u brainiacs out there might have some insight why fully grown men seem to spend their whole lives living in a football fantasy??
They have nothing better to talk about.
This is often a conversation you'll get in a work environment.

See, I personally define a 'geek' as a person who’s intelligence and mental energy and focus has been wastefully misdirected into areas and pursuits that yield neither 'material' nor 'spiritual' gains. Someone who is socially impaired as a result of the areas in which he has CHOSEN to focus his mental and emotional energy...how can that ever be ‘cool’?

"The hero and the coward both feel the same thing, but the hero uses his fear, projects it onto his opponent, while the coward runs. It's the same thing, fear, it's what you do with it that matters."

Then by your standards, I would not define myself a geek.

Also, materialistic gains? Surely that is not a good road to go down. That is the problem the western world is currently facing. They all want the latest iPhone to show off at school.

I said 'material', why have you swapped the word 'material' for materialistic'? They aren't the same. A material gain is simply a gain that's quantifable/measurable.

Meanwhile:Materialistic - excessively concerned with physical comforts or the acquisition of material things rather than spiritual , intellectual, moral, or cultural values.

I said that pursuits that consume time and offer NIETHER material OR spiritual gain, are by definition a waste of time, that's what 'geeks' do, and that's why geeks aren't ever 'cool'.

This reminded me about this IT Crowd episode, proper funny, geeks learning football quotes and trying to blend it, the final quote says it all

Back to the topic, I watch football, but don't talk about it all the time, but have mates at work that go on about it every time. Most of my close mates are not into football, so that works for me.

Still don't get why PL Footballers are on £200k+ /week, guess because of all the fans paying for the ridiculous sky fees, but I stream most matches or go to the pub.

Memorize a few names, stats and dates. Then you can be one of the LAAAAAAAAAADZ.

Seriously, football banter does my fucking tits in. Like its the default topic to talk about as a British male. All the "lads" at work bang on about it every day. It's dreadfully monotonous - "Did you see (insert club) last night, what the fuck was (insert player) doing? Yeh, well (insert player) is looking much better".

Most these "lads" are in there mid thirties and bang on all day about what "lads" they are. The reality is that there all married with kids, watch X Factor on a Saturday and wash there car on a Sunday. So yeh, they need to talk about something I suppose.
