I've been digging around for some motivational material, well not even that really, just something that takes my mind off all the task, problems and doubts. I thought a book that I've had for a good few years "Mastering your hidden self" would help, but well, it wasn't a good read for me.
I wanted something about self mastery without all the reading of a thick book.
I watched the film 'Invictus' and I then realised that Invictus is actually a Victorian poem written by William Henley:
Quote:
Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.
In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.
Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.
It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

I'm really not a person who likes poems, I used to fall asleep in many of my English classes but this poem I really like the message of motivation and self mastery; you control yourself.
My favourite lines are:
Quote:
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.
In the fell clutch of circumstance,
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

It was very powerful for me. Just thought I'd share it.
