I agree, it is an odd evolutionary preference to have when compared to other preferences like hip/chest ratios which are much more logical.
It could possibly be linked to health - as the article says, a dark Limbal Ring creates a greater contrast, making the white of the eyes seem all the more whiter. Since many illnesses can have an effect on the eyes (hence why a doctor will always check your eyes when you have a check-up), your eyes can be a good indicator of health.
So healthy looking eyes = healthy genes?
