I move to England 20 years ago. And through facebook I got back in touch with class mates I had not seen for 30 years or people I had completely forgotten. We had a fabilous reunion last year. Now if it wasnt for facebook, such a reunion would not have happened.

Let me tell you a story. Before facebook, internet SOCIAL FORUMS on different subjects and topics were very popular. There was a baby girl, Megan who at nine months, was told she had a malignant brain tumuor. After 10 months of operations and chemotherapy, her parents were told to take her home to die. Her dad was a stubborn old git. So he went on one of these internet support forums on brain tumuor. Was directed to a world renown surgeon in New York. The parents raised £200k, moved to New York. Cut a long story short, the surgeon and the oncologist saved her life when the local doctors in Manchester had given up on her.

Ten years on, MY daughter Megan is still alive today. The power of social media!
Well Legend...all I can say is wow! What a beautiful and heartwarming story, makes me feel a little less cynical! Thanks for sharing it!

I will say however, and I'm treading on eggshells here due to the emotive nature of your story, but you're putting words into my mouth a little bit. I'm sure you realise I'm talking about the wider trend in society, with people becoming increasingly cut off from each other, exchanging banal chit chat about nothing, the quality of discourse going through the floor, spending hours of their lives with "friends" they've never met and having "relationships" on a screen. That's what I mean by fake friendships and an artificial life. See you're using it as an enhancement, but for many it's becoming a replacement, especially amongst kids.

Of course there are benefits when used properly (look at this forum for example), and of course a medical forum is a different affair, I couldn't agree more. However it's not those types of sites and usage I'm talking about.

I can be a little fast and loose with my language and maybe that got to you in view of your story, not my intention I assure you

Totally agreed with you here. I'm just throwing the positive spin on the use of social media. I am teaching and encouraging my kids to spend more time outdoors. They play football for every Saturday and train every Friday. The only games they have is Nintendo DS. They dont have any Wii or PS3 or XBox. They are taugh to surf the internet for educational purpose. I would hate to see them spending hours and hours on COD or idle chit chat with people they dont know...!

I can see why they do it though, I am volunteered to babysit my niece and nephew on occasion, and after a day of that I'm usually completely and utterly fucked! After a while you must just need to quiet them down to preserve your sanity. I love em to bits but have no idea what I'm doing, I just try to stop them hurting themselves until my duty is done, it's like being a second reserve goal keeper really!
