Totally agree. A few years ago when I was completely clueless me and my mates used to do day game (not that we knew what it was) in town and I stuck to just saying "hi im...etc" cos it was all I had back then, and it worked quite a lot as far as getting numbers goes. It was after that that I had no idea lol, so it tended to not lead to much.

What I figure about it is that you actually display a lot of confidence and value by being up front and genuine (as long as it's positive and friendly) because most people just plain don't do it. It's like a big DHV.
