It's merely an indicator of tone. Saying "Phil you're such a dick" can be interpreted two ways, either playful or serious. Use of a smiley simply indicates the tone intended and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that, it simply stops misunderstandings.
Writing doesn't have the intricacies of body language and vocal tonality that would indicate this offline. Stupid pictures is all we've got.
