I'll chime in with some help on what has worked for me on a practical note, without getting too indepth hardcore:

1) Diet is massively important. Think about how easy it is to eat a donut vs how hard it is on a treadmill to burn off that amount of calories. Get your diet under control.

2) Bodybuilding.com is not just for giant freaks. There's loads of great information about losing fat, building muscle etc. Some guys take it to the extreme, but there's lots of good information for the 'normal bloke.'

3) If you want to lose fat then you'll have to start calorie counting. Work out how many calories you burn off each day (lots of good calculators out there) then make sure you eat less than that.

4) Find stuff you like doing which helps your goals - it's the only way to sustain things - for example, I've found lots of low calorie food which I actually like eating (albeit not as much as fish n chips). I took up martial arts training which is absolutely draining but I love doing it.
