If normal conversation prevents you getting a positive response you need work on your overall game Zone. There's more to this than opening.
As for the kid who's starting out, not that I've ever taught anyone. I would encourage them to take more risks. 'He who dares wins' as the saying goes. Canned lines do not encourage this behaviour.
