Using the universally-understood notion of a date.

Probably, the best way is to ask someone if they would like a date; the reason being that a date is easily and rapidly understood as meaning meeting up with no strings, that a second date not happening is no big deal and acceptable and understood by both....it is just a date.

If you are picking up in a supermarket, or out on the street, then this is good shorthand code which is universally understood, and so can be used.

If their default reflex reply is to say no, then you have opportunity to persuade them to change their mind, as it is only a date, and would be a fun thing to do, even if it came to nothing, which would be ok.....it is only a date. This gives them the time to weigh up the situation without any commitment. The date thing is a very useful tool.

To ask if they would like to go out for a drink just kinda has the wrong ring. When they are so on the spot all of a sudden then they need thinking time, non-committal time, just the millliseconds. Many would default say no then afterwards think well maybe i should have, but they didn't have the time, but the date is an easy one for them to go with as it is non-committal and understood by both for what it is.

This is completely back to front. It's implicitly understood in the situation of going up to a girl that 'go get a drink' means date, but it's so often used because it implies a more casual frame that 'let's go on a date. How much have you actually done this tat? What basis of experience for saying this?

Because he was irritating and an idiot

I rarely ever say "Let's go on a date".

The word itself has a sense of pressure implied and I want her to have her guard down and relaxed. The important thing is to just get together and then deal with all the implicit tension that comes from a date through escalation when we are in front of each other.

Usually most women know from the subtext you are asking that it implies a date. However leaving a bit of mystery of how invested you are.
