Default Emotions and the body - 20-04-2011, 08:45 PM

This is totally random but I was just thinking about it.

Couple years ago, there was a girl I used to meet up with. We were really close friends, ended up kissing and whatever but I never escalated it.

Anyway, At the time, I was still pretty distraught over how my ex had cheated on me.. So she was lay on my chest one night listening to my heart beat, and she said it was going faster than usual. At that moment, I was currently thinking about my ex cheating on me.

So I did a test, started thinking about how crap I felt about her cheating, and my heart started racing.

My point is, its the first kind of "evidence" that the mind emotions and the physical body are linked, that I have ever actually come across.

Just thought I would share that in case anyone else has noticed physical changes when under stress or heartache.

Neurologists now believe that neurology is not the study of the brain, but the study of the brain and the maze of interconnected nervous system pathways throughout the body, the brain is not an isolated element in your skull in other words.

What happens is that the brain can't distinguish between the real and imagined in certain contexts, all it knows is that it strengthens neural pathways that are created by emotion so you can efficiently deal with the issue next time. These neural pathways become like a superhighway compared to normal neural pathways, so when the brain sees something that looks a bit like the same thing again, the behaviour can flow so smoothly and efficiently down this superhighway that it becomes a reinforced self fulfilling prophesy, whether it's real or not.

It's all meant to protect us in a natural environment, to keep us alive. In a modern context though, it can get out of hand and skew our perception. This is why solid advice that rationally makes sense, doesn't fit into our reality at first.

I love this! You are completely right -its basically how we can run on automatic by subconciously using what we have learnt in previous situations. It frees up concious thought processes to concentrate on new and different things. Except it is often counterproductive to use what we learnt in a previous situation in the present, things just don't fit anymore. Its the cause of bad habbits and social anxiety. Luckily it's completely reversible!

Wondering if you have come across Acceptance and Commitment Therapy? It's an amazing and fairly new way of taking all the stressfull learnt triggers of emotion and distress and undoing it all. It part of a huge tird wave behaviourism movement and as much as it kills me to say it, it is already worth millions more than the likes of NLP - watch this space!
