Default Morale - 01-01-2015, 04:17 PM

A good example is the tv series 'Red Dwarf'. The basic premise is that Lister was on a spaceship in some kind of stasis, as a sort of punishment, and something happens catastrophic which means that he is the last human ever at all in the universe. The ships computer keeps everything going, and has to keep Lister in stasis for 5 million years or something, until the background radiation dies down to a level where the computer can wake him and give him the depressing news of his situation.

The computer is very clever, and realising how depressing the situation actually is, it creates a hologram person for Lister, as company, as a room mate. The clever thing is that this hologram is full of personality problems which is a pain for Lister, but it is this, that Lister feels he isn't the one with the problems, that helps Lister keep sane and well.....and in this way he has morale, is able to go on in this dire situation.

Our lives are full of struggles and we are sensitive and emotional beings. Some people actually, of course, lose a sense of morale that they kill themselves. I suppose given enough crap it could be any of us. But my point is that morale is really serious to keep and not lose.

To that end, I try to understand what it is which keeps me feeling confident and cheerful. I like to be a decent person, I like to, say, not gossip or talk about people behind their backs. Other people do it a lot, but I don't, and in this way i respect myself, and with this respect I can not only hold my head up high, but feel good about myself, and have a general optimism that I have good purpose for existing in the world.......I contribute, I do good, I am a good citizen, a good neighbour, etc.

If I wasn't these things, if I conducted myself badly, then i think I would lose a sense of morale. It is a difficult thing is life, keeping up and happy and so able to keep going, the strength to carry on. A strong sense of good morale is a great tool, as also it helps by meaning you do not need stuff to keep you up and happy or distracted from a bad situation....just a walk by the river can be enough.

It was this time last year. I was doing my house up for proper, all at once in one big push. It involved a rewire. All the carpets were thrown and wallpaper stripped off, and there was much knocking off and plastering. It was in a bad state to start with, like it had never been done for a hundred years. Windows needed replacing, cementing, rebuilding bits. Damp patches sorting out. floor boards up, the central heating packed up. bathroom suite stripped out. It was a lot of work going on. Much needed to dry before more could be done further, so i was working throughout the whole house.

You can imagine just what it was like, and in the depths of dark and cold dank winter; muck, deep muck all over everything, piles of debris in the rooms. It was very very miserable. It was like a house of horrors, like some diabloical crime had been committed and the very fabric of the house was doom and gloom. In short, it was very very depressing.

I had to live in it at the same time. This constant scenery of misery seeped into my whole being and made me depressed. Of course, I knew it was for the best, and only temporary. Eventually I finished everything, and all new carpets, and lampshades and curtains and rails and everything all new, without cluttering the place up with too many tables and chairs, etc. It is very minimalist indeed.

This experience brought it home to me that the scene around you can affect your morale very much, and clutter, too. I try to keep things neat and tidy and clean, like a temple. This helps keep my morale up.

I had a fantastic day today. Being New Year's day, I had a day out with my girlfriend....a good friend of mine who is female. I appreciated the whole day very much. We drove for about 15 miles over the rainy and atmosphreic moors, we threaded our way through cobbly paths and snicket ways in an old higgldy-piggldy town. We walked on a river and looked at boats and ducks. We bought some bread and something to put on it and found a dry warm place to eat it in a railway station. She is such pleasant company, then we came back and made pizzas.....a really good day out. It was good because i valued, all the little aspects of it, the drive, the puddles, the squadron of honking geese, the low light and leaden clouds..........all these things were riches. If I would have had to order the day, I would have had to pay for the geese, pay for the puddles, and extra for the boats, etc, etc, etc. But I didn't have to buy them. But I valued them highly just the same, and this is what made me feel I had a wonderful day. This tops up my morale and gives me the strength to keep going, to keep it together, to make progress. In consequence, I am very happy and have loads of exciting things to look forwards to.....for instance, a boat which is fantastic, and going to spend a lot of time sailing around and touring. I could only have achieved this by having good morale because it all takes time and effort to put together, and that can be a struggle to keep the stamina.

And as for women, I think it probably shows and wins you points somewhere along the line, to be a survivor, to be a person who can cope and handle it. If anyone wants to take the piss, well, I'm the one with the boat, and time. Without morale, the will to live, I wouldn't be able to achieve much. It is not an easy life. It is a serious business to look after yourself, and look out for others. I think there is a lot of respect in that, in anyone who can hold their end up.
