I'm not saying what is or isn't alpha but I liked this interview with Russell Brand.

I only watched the later half but the way he controlled a room full of news anchors who are used to being the people in control demonstrates leadership or alpha qualities...

My experience of alpha would be all the things you suggested, also when a person is noticably loud and 'attention grabbing' they seem most aphla in a set, when some one knows there the aplha male everyone around them senses it and with out them knowing they will be feeding the aplha more and more energy, these are the hardest sets to sarge

An alpha male is the leader of the group. Not all alpha males are cocks, in fact I find that most of them are alright because more often than not they have desirable qualities which make people follow them as "the Alpha".

The problem comes when the feel insecure as the Alpha..

I think an 'Alpha' male is generally a cool, calm and collected guy. He behaves in this way even in the most challenging and intense of situations which makes him a natural leader of men without needing to dictate his 'leadership'. Being an alpha male is just about being a man. It is surprising really how few men posses the maturity to be a true man.

The qualities required to be an 'Alpha' male or more simply just a 'man' are outlined so eloquently in Rudyard Kipling's poem - 'If'.

fuck yo' alpha shit im sigma baby.

Seriously though I think the concept of the alpha male is a little washed out. No one person is 100% alpha or 100% beta, we all have elements of the whole spectrum inside us.

In middle class western society its virtually impossible for someone to be an alpha male. We have government to take care of our welfare we have police and military to protect us, in this day and age to be alpha is not needed. Read The Rawness The Rawness - Myth of the Middle Class Alpha Male to better understand this.

Unless you live at the very top of the food chain or the very bottom its impossible to be alpha. What most people are describing are admirable character qualities that equate to being sucessful in their life endevours. The rawness talks about the 'Renaissance Man' this is a cool guy who exhibits traditional alpha qualities with enough beta to societally get by The Renaissance Man this stuff changed my whole way of viewing the alpha, beta, gamma, signa archetypes, and I cannot recommend enough taking some time on Rickys site.

But just to throw my two penneth in, if you wanna see the ultimate of ultimate alpha males it has to be this guy!
