Default Which martial art to do?? - 06-06-2013, 10:07 PM

Ive been interested in taking up martial arts again for a while.
I did karate when I was in my teens and enjoyed it but I packed it in after a few years because I felt it wasn't dynamic enough. I always thought id pick it up again and now feels like the right time to give it another go. However theres tons of choice of types of martial art and im trying to decide which to take. I don't really know a lot about styles and ethos of some of them. I was looking for jeet kune do but there are no classes locally. So im leaning towards Kung fu or taekwondo as there are classes locally.
Im ideally looking for something dynamic with lots of punches, kicks and movement. Suggestions of a good all round martial art to look into taking would be great

Theres Ju Jitsu, karate, think theres aikido the town over also but im not so interested in it. Its just the basic classes of styles round here. I did fancy wing chun but nothing going there. I was actually leaning towards the Kung fu as my first choice.
Why is it to be avoided? 2 much bs that goes with it??
I want firstly to be able to defend myself at a more competent level than I can presently and fitness as my main focus. Im not so fussed about competing etc
My leg work is crap at the moment so kicks, speed and defensive work are what I need to work on foremostly.

Thanks Jaz ill look at boxing clubs and the Ju Jitsu then and see if they do full contact sparring. I also check out the Karate tho im not enamoured with the idea. I wish there were more options up here for jkd and muay thai.I rated Wing chun highly but I now realize why you`ve rated it so badly after reading a bit about Bruce Lee saying it is to slow and formal for self defence

"Wing Chun Kung Fu is the art that Yip Man taught to Bruce Lee, and which Lee rebelled against as too slow and formal for self-defense.

Lee invented his own version of Wing Chun, because of the inadequacies he noticed in Wing Chun. With this method, he defeated Wong in 3 minutes, when almost any other fighter in the world would have needed a lot more time, and would have suffered much more injury"

Ok thanks Jaz that's the ones ill go for provided I can throw the cash together
Tell you what I voiced you opinion to a bunch of my friends last night. The conversation ended up being like a warzone (especially over kung fu and wing chun) with all kinds of arguments for this and that and different styles being better than the other. Hours and hours it went on for, I wish I never mentioned it.
I cant believe there is so much disagreement in general with which fighting styles are the strongest and weakest and why.

Jaz have you ever heard of Vale Tudo? How would you rate it in your shit-top tier list?
Is it worth a look as it seems to be in the same vane as Ju jitsu but of a more free style variety.

Ah right cheers I didn't know that, it seemed to be advertised as some kind of Ju Jitsu??
It might be worth checking out as the club seems to be run by a top Ju jitsu guy
