"Is it OK to compliment a stranger?" bbc article

BBC News - Is it OK to compliment a stranger?

Did anyone read this today? What a stupid world we live in when some people think it's wrong to compliment a stranger.

My standard approach is:

Woolf whistle, <PAUSE> NICE TITS LUV!

They clearly do not understand the concept of giving value without expecting anything in return.

Thing is who actually does this.

The founder of one of these groups, Hollaback!, has said remarks like "hi, gorgeous" and "come over here, love" made women feel uncomfortable, and should be challenged.

AFC's that's who and I welcome them to continue doing it because if women perceives that as the norm then indirect is really going to come in under the rader.

they are not direct statements, they are just grunts, of men who want to half come across like they are joking so when they get rejected they can play it off.

indirect is sleezy as fuck as far as im concerned! hiding ur intentions ... whats the point

Arguably it is impossible to be totally altruistic because by paying somone a compliment and not expecting anything back or having an interest in getting anything- you are still walking away with the feel good factor inside of what you ahve done...so again arguably you ahve just given her that compliment to make yourself feel good.
-Selfish

Ahh but that's not expecting anything back from the other person. That's merely making yourself feel good having made someone else feel good(preferably).

The fact that all acts we do are motivated by the self and positive emotional feedback we receive from it doesn't make those acts a bad thing either, I wouldn't even say they're selfish. Yes you get a good feeling out of something but that doesn't mean you acted in your own best interests.

Giving value is its own reward.

Like a single flame can be used to light many fires without diminishing itself.

What irritates me most about this article is the fact is questions genuine compliments, therefore sewing further seeds of doubts into the mind of the guy who is working his way up to become more direct and openly sexual with girls. The difference in the argument is between lads impressing their mates through thinly veiled alpha behaviour versus being authentic and unaffected by the outcome, through a sheer urge to take action. The later should almost always be encouraged.
