Likely this is overly considered, but the thing that leaps straight out at me is that it could be Darwinism. Consider the tribal past that makes up the vast majority of human evolution. Intimacy indicates emotional bonding and an increased probability of your staying around to help raise the nipper, so nature plays the odds and encourages conception within this favourable environment. Whereas animalistic sex, may indicate a casual experience with low probability of the male hanging around, so nature again plays the odds by discouraging conception within this unfavourable environment. Or to put a slightly darker spin on it, nature rewards men for intimacy, and rewards women for sleeping around. This is because the species is most likely to survive by men supporting the women and bringing in food and such, but also by having genetically diverse conceptions as well as increased probability of conception, all via having multiple male partners. Actually, now I come to think of it, somewhere in this rationale lays some important truths about the struggles between the sexes. You could even draw links between the way we’ve structured society to minimise this instinct and the conflict it creates, as promiscuous women are likely to cause a lot of violence between men. One might even say that AFC’s tend toward the one end of the spectrum, and learn to move toward the other end through Pickup, likely ending up in the middle somewhere. So yeah, how's that for over analysis!

Probably alot of the cases aren't of people not believing the content, but more that they don't want to believe it. Sperm wars is a horrible mindset to have.
