Default Was I "too honest" here? - 16-09-2016, 11:35 PM

Can't believe I'm posting something as trivial as this on a message board but hey-ho.

My platonic female friend invited me out for her bf's birthday. I've flirted in & out of the same social circle as him for 10+ years....but I don't really "know" him. I don't like or dislike him, he's always been cool to me when we exchange small talk....I just barely know him or much about him. I deleted him off facebook around 18 months ago because didn't see the point in having him on my list - this was before they were an item.

Anyways, found it weird that she invited me & not him - the point being if she wasn't his gf I'd never have been invited, if I had a party I wouldn't invite him & he as the host of the event didn't ask me directly. Politely declined & said I had a busy day (dodging the stuff I've mentioned above), she offered to let me leave my car at hers for easiness & wasn't taking no for an answer.

So...came clean, politely & calmly then told her I don't feel comfortable going out as I don't know him & its weird she's invited me & not him. She's now got pretty pissy asking me what my problem is ("You deleted him for no reason", "You've been in my flat with him", "been on nights out with him" - "Your excuses are just shit, utter rubbish you don't know him - you know him fine!")

No I don't - In 10 years you'd be lucky if our cumulative time in conversation together exceeds 15 minutes.

Am I lacking in social awareness here? Is something going on here I've not realised? Am I "not getting" something here?
Have I unintentionally insulted her or her bf?
Should I have not come clean & just kept saying I'm busy instead?

I'm trying to be more authentic & say what I think instead of not saying it for fear of repurcussion - and I get punished for it. She's been a best friend of mine for 12 years, WTF is she blowing up at me like this for?

Neither of the above. She's always been popular with guys, barely been single for longer than a year in the 10 + years I've known her, always has guys queing at her door. I know what your getting at - I can understand why shes popular with men, she has a mega positive outlook on live, always bubbly and happy go lucky - I've just never felt anything more than friends.

It's not confirmed yet, but I have a feeling she's been made redundant from her job & that this reaction is related to that & not me (she maybe just wanted her friends around her at the party). Will have to wait & see next time I see her. I probably didn't even need to post on here, was just completely out of character for her personality to go all nuclear on me like that.

She's "normal". To me she's not stunning or ugly......she's just my friend.

I'm not hiding behind what guys think of her? I know her extremely well.
