The truth,.... or some exaggeration?

This is an interesting question, I'm just about to go off travelling the world and was wondering people's thoughts :

When Introcing myself to potential targets, should I be honest with my profession (i.e. web/software developer) or should Iperhaps 'invent' something a bit more interesting?

I have a friend who used to invent all manner of stories & used to take a different girl home every night.

(of course it did backfire once when he told a girl he was a professional Hang-glider & agreed to take her gliding some-time. - She then turned up at his door with her gear ready to go! - True story!)

I understand the benefits of perhaps providing them with a more 'socially-proofed' story to 'impress', but the flipside isthat If I hit it off with someone I have to explain later on why I didn't tell the exact truth.

What is peopl's thoughts?

Don't lie! You should never build relationships of any sort on lies!

You will get found out and it isn't a good look!

Software developments awesome and if you have passion about your work she will see that! She wants a man with passion not a liar

Interesting, thanks for the advice :-)

In fairness it wasn't really my idea, nor something I'm comfortable with, One of my mates just said that this trip might be a good opportunity to reinvent myself as whatever I wanted.

Seems unnecessary IMo, but I was just wondering what others views are on the situation. - your immediate & decisive response is nice to hear buddy thanks.

Trying to actively impress girls won't be attractive. What you do can be cool if you say so. Girls like it if you hold a passion for something, whatever it may be.

Nova - hope you dont mind me saying this but...

When Nova wasnt in work for a couple of weeks he had lots of success, having a job or not doesnt change anything. You can be an attactive guy if you want to be.

You dont have to tell a girl your an astronaught for you to get poon

The girls didn’t give a crap when I had no job. I brewed beer, did art and wandered the streets stalking Asian chicks.

Only lie if its to convince her you're something insane like an astronaut who ripped the first bong sent into space, or you started a band that later became U2 but got kicked out for keeping it too real.

That's funny. But not to impress.

Lately I've been doubting the career I'm carving out in substance misuse. I don't think it appears attractive, at least in theory.

But I have to say that I've had girls really take a shine to me when they see how passionate I get when talking about educating kids on the dangers drugs can cause so that they hopefully don't ruin their lives. The fact that I used to take drugs myself is overshadowed to them by what it means to me that I try & ensure kids don't go down a path I've taken, which is the basis of why I'm involved in the line of work anyway, which they see & love.

I don't remember a girl ever fucking me off or looking down at me. I even pulled & got laid at least twice partly due to what I've been doing in the drug education/counselling/rehabilitation shizzle.

I'm not sure I want that career anymore, but the point is that it doesn't matter what you do as long as you have a burning desire or passion for it.

EDIT: It might not exactly be so easy to have a burning desire for software engineering without coming across as weird, but I'm sure you can work the rest out yourself now.
