Default Your Career and Future goals - 13-04-2013, 11:27 AM

Thanks to Twisted and Jaz for starting up this subsection. Since the majority of us spend a significant amount of time (around 30% of our lives) in a place of work and earning some dollar it is only right that if we seek fulfillment in our lives that we pay considerable attention to this very sizeable chunk. It would also be interesting to see what others do for a living as we have a very broad membership here from all walks of life which is something quite unique and should be celebrated.

So, what I'd like to start with is this; Tell us what you do for a living?, are you satisfied in your area of work?, what are your career goals? (if any) and If so how do you intend to get there and in how many years?

I'll kick-off.

I work freelance for a small Architecture practice.

I am largely satisfied in what I do, since a young age I wanted to be an Architect but the realities are not quite as 'glamorous' as often perceived. Actually being creative and designing accounts for about 10% of the job, the other 90% is spent trying to avoid getting sued!!

My goals are to finish my final professional exams, get another 1-2 years experience under my belt then set-up my own small practice ideally in partnership taking on small to medium scale commissions mainly within the private residential and commercial sectors. I hope to have this established within 5 years.

I belief also in life you should never stop learning so at some stage I would like to pursue a degree in either psychology or philosophy (Kowalski is to blame for stoking my interest in the latter).

Cheers.

currently working in the career I chose since leaving school worked my way up to manager level got free degree etc and on a good wage lives pretty good but...

Someone once asked what do you want out of your life(He meant career wise) as a smart arse 20 something I replied "to be free" to my surprise this was accepted as a pretty good answer seems people could relate.
so as the self nominated office clown had his catchphrase this became mine when ever asked the career question.

it wasn't to the last few years, maybe when I discovered self development that I began to ponder what the words "to be free" actually meant to me. I could start on a very long post of the whole picture to give you the jist which is related to the post it's not working for other people and having the freedom live were and when I want.

last year I started internet marketing mainly learning and trying stuff didn't really get stuck in deep maybe because there was some self doubt still lurking.

As a bit of a warning before I go any further anyone thinking of jumping into the internet marketing it makes the pua ripoff industry look tame don't get pulled in by the so called gurus they will empty your pockets.

Anyways I digress so towards the backend of last year I pulled my finger out and started to treat it more like a business.
As of this year I have a clear plan consistent money coming in and a plan to diversify.
it really takes a lot of planning to juggle work, starting a business and social life.

If I quit my job and did the business full time I would exceed earning but would have to give up a lot fro several months i'm quite happy to build this up in my spare time and still live comfortably with my normal wage.

Great stuff Face, sounds like you've got a good plan figured out and you are satisfied with the direction you are heading. Best of luck with this endeavor.

Nice posts so far guys! I work in sales, have done since I left college/quit uni. I find it's one of those with a huge pro list and a huge con list. Best things for me are the instant cash flow you can create when your motivated and the fact you can move anywhere and pickup a job in sales without much of a sweat. You also get to network quite a bit especially for me as I've worked in a few different countries and lots of different companies..

I would say it has it's down side too, I left my last company because I didn't see any value in what I was selling and if you pick the wrong product sales can be a nightmare. I'm now looking for my next venture and its pretty sad the amount of companies I've came across selling shit stuff for over the odds prices.

On the pros I've managed to work maybe 2 years out of the last 4 or so and earned and spent double most my peers having worked half as much. Done lots of traveling with the money and time ect.

I also aim to be financially free and I'm currently looking at ways to create a passive income large enough for me to move somewhere I can live on less and spend my time doing what I want rather than 9-5 to make someone else wealthy.

Long term I am hoping to study serveral subjects the likes of philosophy and politics and by the end of my life hope I'm able to contribute something of value or create some positive impact from the fact I've been here.
