Actually, better than "upper hand" is Patrice O'Neal's explanation on the Black Phillip show, paraphrased of course - sometimes you fuck up and find yourself driving behind the girl down a narrow one way street, it's more or less impossible to get ahead of her, you need to turn off the road.

Girls don't have direction, so they can't lead. When we chase they think they know where they are going but they only know where they are coming from. Away is not a direction and away needs an X to be moving away from. If you are that X, stop... remove yourself. If she really liked it, she'll come back around either trying to bait you to chase again or sometimes all humble having learned how she likes you now.
